As a parent, will I get to be involved in your investigation?

 Yes. Parents are invited to participate and are an integral part of the investigation.

 Could my child be expelled or suspended as a result of this process?

 The Threat Assessment process is independent from any disciplinary decision that the school may make.  The focus of the threat assessment or sexual incident response is violence prevention. Our team will be looking at what happened and will make recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future.

 The school may determine to move forward with discipline based on the incident, but this process is not part of the investigation.

Will I get to know the outcome of the investigation?

 The school will verbally share the outcome of the investigation with you.

What if I disagree with the outcome?

 Since this investigation is not tied to any formal school discipline or criminal charges, there is not a grievance process for the outcome. You are always welcome to reach out to our High Desert ESD staff to ask questions and we will do our best to answer your questions and explain the outcome.

 Could my child face criminal charges?

 The Student Threat Assessment and Sexual Incident Response investigations are independent from law enforcement. However, law enforcement is a critical partner on both of these teams. Law enforcement may decide to open a criminal investigation based on your child’s behavior. Only law enforcement and the District Attorney can determine if your if the behavior rises to the level of a crime.
